Tomes and Turpentine Explained

Tomes and Turpentine is a weekly (ish) blog from amateur writer Scarlett Sharpe.

Being a struggling writer in New York City is stressful, and publishing my thoughts is weirdly comforting. This blog is me indulging in my aesthetic sensibilities shamelessly and unapologetically. I post all sorts of things, from long ramblings about my life to vegan recipes. Feel free to come along for the ride.

Aspirational Posting Schedule

Monday: Nothing
Tuesday: Nothing
Wednesday: Rejection Post – I post something that I submitted to a literary magazine that didn’t get accepted
Thursday: Regular Post – I ramble about my life and my deepest darkest thoughts
Friday: Poetry Post – I post a (probably very bad) poem that I’ve written
Saturday: Sex Scene Post – I write a one paragraph sex scene and post it
Sunday: Photo Post – I take a photo (hopefully artistic) of something I like and post it

I’m calling this an aspirational posting schedule because it is pretty ambitious and I have several other projects I am trying to work on at the same time. I’ve also been trying to keep some semblance of a chore schedule so I’m not living in squalor. Hopefully, I can still stick to this schedule as much as possible, but we’ll see.

On October and the Joys of Cooking

WHAT I WROTE YESTERDAY: October is my favorite month because it brings me my favorite weather (crisp, rainy, colorful), my favorite foods (pumpkin pie, soups and curries of all kinds, pears, squash), and my favorite holiday (Halloween, obviously). I am so glad it’s finally October. The changing of the month hasn’t suddenly relieved me of…

On Being ‘Sick’ and Figuring Out What the Fuck to do with my Life

The day before yesterday, I went to Ash’s going away party, which was both incredibly fun and incredibly exhausting. Fun because I love Ash and I got to see a bunch of her other friends who I get along with quite well. Exhausting because I had spent six hours at work just before getting to…
